The acting company will be cast from these initial auditions, with "callbacks"--that is, role assignments--made during the first rehearsals.
EXPECTATION and PREPARATION:
Please Provide: Headshot/Resume (if available)
HUNCHBACK will have an acting company as usual, plus a large chorus that sings with the pit. Members of the chorus will learn the beautiful, challenging score, often singing in Latin, but will have a significantly smaller rehearsal commitment that also offers more flexibility. Music will not need to be memorized, and the chorus, just like the pit, will not even be called to all tech week rehearsals. These open rehearsals are for people interested in either the acting company or pit chorus. Additional pit chorus audition opportunities will be available after these open rehearsals. This is a fantastic opportunity for young performers who cannot commit to a full rehearsal schedule or who aren't interested in learning lines/choreography, but still want a challenging artistic experience as a part of the Barn Junior family. We are looking to create a well-rounded SATB ensemble for the pit chorus, so we encourage all voice types to audition.
If you are auditioning for the ACTING COMPANY, please prepare a musical theatre piece NOT from HUNCHBACK, approximately 32 bars. Music in a style similar to HUNCHBACK would be appropriate, but please consider your range and material appropriate for your age. You will need to provide your own digital accompaniment via an Mp3 player, phone, or other device that can plug into a standard 1/8" headphone jack. Do not plan on live streaming your music (e.g. using YouTube) as wireless access is not predictable in the rehearsal hall. No acapella auditions for the acting company will be accepted.
If you ONLY interested in auditioning for the PIT CHORUS, you may, if you choose, use more classical or standard choral literature in a style similar to HUNCHBACK. Music in a foreign language, especially Latin would be acceptable, but is not a requirement. If you are unfamiliar with the score to HUNCHBACK, consider listening to it's opening number "Bells of Notre Dame". If you are auditioning for pit chorus ONLY, you may bring accompaniment on a device as described above, or perform acapella to demonstrate pitch maintenance skills.
